With the opening of the new baseball season, it's time to throw out the first pitch. Thanks to Dwight Jaynes from CSN for reminding me of my favorite "first pitch" ever. It wasn't an opening day game and it wasn't at a Mariners game.

It was in the 2001 World Series just weeks after 9-11 had rocked New York and the world to it's core. When the series came to Yankee Stadium the President decided to visit and was asked to throw out the first pitch. Much more than a formality on that occasion, the President found the strike zone from the mound and the full-throated roar from the weary New Yorkers still gives me chills.

Our national game has a power to heal us somehow and this moment went a long way toward doing exactly that. Play ball!
