Pat O'Connor is the Coordinator for Start Making A Reader Today or the S.M.A.R.T. program at Vose Elementary in Beaverton. This is what her nominator, and fellow volunteer, Dolores Redden had to say about Pat:
Pat coordinates the volunteers for the S.M.A.R.T. program at Vose Elementary. She energizes the volunteers, coordinates with the teachers to select student’s that the volunteers, like myself, will read to once a week during the school year. Pat has designed the program so each volunteer has three students that we work with throughout the year. It gives the student one-on-one reading for 20 minutes two times a week, with a volunteer helping them with their skills outside of the usual classroom time. Not only does Pat coordinate the volunteers, but she also has a special relationship with the kids, getting to know them as individuals throughout the year. She motivates them in so many different ways, making it fun by letting the students pick out stickers that go on a tally sheet to show that they read a particular book. By the end of the year, you see a change in these kids, not only in their reading ability but in their confidence level. Pat is what makes the S.M.A.R.T. program successful at Vose. She empowers the volunteers to help the kids, and makes the program fun and exciting.
Congratulations Pat O'Connor from K103!
