The fact that today is Willard Scott's birthday is the reason for today's Throwback Thursday. Willard came to Portland in the summer of 1988 for the dedication of the Weather of the original articles of Portland Weird.

In the pre-dawn hours (as in, 4 AM) Willard did the Today Show weather from Pioneer Courthouse Square. I stood right by him--it was near the "Allow Me" umbrella guy. Then, at noon, I MC'd the formal dedication of the contraption.

The Weather Machine, by the way, is still there, doing its thing at noon every day, sounding a fanfare, spraying the crowd, and hoisting up a dragon or a sun to symbolize the day's weather. It's a truly odd thing. Wikipedia does a whole big deal on it.
