30 years ago this month, Madonna signed a huge deal with Pepsi worth $5 million. In January 1989 that was A LOT of money. The deal included use of her new song "Like A Prayer" as well as Pepsi sponsoring Madonna's world tour. Madonna wanted to use the commercial to launch "Like a Prayer" globally before its actual release—the first time something like this was being done in the music industry.
The commerical debuted during the The 31st Annual Grammy Awards in February 1989. And aired again a week later during The Cosby Show, one of the biggest shows on TV at the time.
