It was sunny but cold in Minneapolis for the home opener of the Minnesota Twins. Mariners pitcher James Paxton paused his warm-ups for the National Anthem. And then it got weird. An eagle who was part of the pre-game ceremony had been circling the park and decided James looked enough like a big maple that he’d be a good place to land.
Ignoring his handlers on the mound he shot an approach to Paxton’s shoulder. Paxton says he could see the bird was confused but knew he couldn’t out run him so decided to stand firm and see what happened.
Ironically, Paxton – known as the “Big Maple” is in a new Mariners commercial this season where he takes care of a nest of eggs in his hat. The Twins went on to beat the Mariners so they gave us the bird twice.
