I Know That Song! The One Charlie Puth Heard On The Radio & Asked to Be On

Hey music fans! If you love to peek backstage and behind the scenes of your favorite artists and songs join us weekday mornings at 7:10 for I Know That Song!

Today's song comes from an American Idol contestant.

‘American Idol” has introduced America to a number of hidden talents over the years, like Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, and Adam Lambert.

Today’s artist was on the 16th season of “American Idol” in 2018. Even though she didn’t win (she finished third), she has remained a very promising figure in country music.

The artist came out with today’s song as her debut single after finishing “American Idol.” It was the first top 10 Hot Country Songs debut by an unaccompanied woman since 2017. Not only that, but it was a top-three hit on Billboard’s Hot 100 and was certified three times Platinum.

But it took a while to get there! The song jumped from #6 to #5 in its 45th week on the Hot 100, making it the longest trip to the Top 5 in chart history. By December of 2020, it had spent 20 weeks at number one, more weeks than any other song by a solo female artist. Prior to that, Maren Morris had held the record with "The Bones," which sat at #1 for 19 weeks earlier in 2020.

The song is for people in a bad relationship who have been dying to express how they feel. It’s a mixed message of wishing the man well but also expressing just how hurt the woman was from the relationship.

Coming up, we’ll tell you how because of Instagram, this song went from being a female solo success to a male female duet, which is the version K103 listener’s are probably more familiar with...

Charlie Puth was a big fan of this song when it was just on country radio, and he reached out to today’s singer on Instagram saying he wanted to remix it and add additional vocals.

She was thrilled their duet version would add a male point of view. "When I wrote it, I was just writing from a woman's kind of perspective," she explained. "And so with him being on it, it kind of shows a men's perspective too, that both sides get cheated on and it's not just a one-sided thing."

"So he's gonna be kind of talking to the guys," she added. "And I'm talking to the girls."

I Hope...Gabby Barret/Charlie Puth...IKTS
