Ring Video Helps Capture Package Thief

Thursday afternoon Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of an Amazon package theft in the 16600 block of SW Blanton Street in the community of Aloha.

A resident told deputies that the theft was caught on camera and subsequently posted the video on Ring.com’s Neighbors app.

Surveillance video shows a man walking up to the front door of the house carrying two pizza boxes on Wednesday afternoon. The man then puts the pizza boxes down and picks up an Amazon package, places it on top of the pizza boxes and leaves with the package.

Around the same time, the property manager of a nearby apartment complex called the sheriff’s office to report that they recognized the man in the video posted on the Neighbors app and knew his identity. Deputies responded to the residence of the individual, identified as 18-year-old Eric Robert Gonzales-Lopes. Some of the stolen items were recovered at his residence and returned to the owner, but Mr. Gonzales-Lopes was not home.

Stolen items included a water filter, vitamin supplements, a hypo-allergenic pillow and a steering wheel cover. In all, the stolen items were worth more than $160.

Friday morning at 6:41 a.m., Gonzales-Lopes turned himself in to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and was booked into jail on charges of mail theft and theft in the second degree.
