I have two vivid memories of Hootie & The Blowfish from the 90's And they're polar opposite in the emotions they conjure up now. Both happened while I was a dj at Z100 Portland.
1. When Hootie first came out we LOVED them. Everyone I knew loved them. Hold My Hand was the favorite song of our friend's young daughter Allie. Allie still remembers when I dedicated the song to her on the radio more than 20 years ago.
2. Suddenly everyone HATED Hootie. Everyone I knew hated them. And this became the culture in radio and media; slamming people and it being entertainment. Perez Hilton blew up.
This piece from Esquire is hilarious, because it's true. We laughed them out of the game for no good reason, while we let Dave Matthews Band continue kicking around the same hacky sack for their next few albums.
Can we all just say sorry to Hootie now?
