Semi hits fallen trees in Coast Range

A 65-year old Salem man is being treated for non-life threatening injuries after the commercial truck he was driving struck several trees in the darkness that had fallen onto Highway 26 in the Coast Range east of the Sunset Rest Area.

A Freightliner truck pulling a flatbed semi-trailer driven by Monti Manary from Salem, was eastbound on Highway 26 near milepost 36 when it struck several trees that had fallen into the traffic lanes. The crash happened just after 2 a.m. Wednesday. The damaged truck and semi-trailer came to rest blocking the eastbound lane and part of the westbound lane.

Manary was transported by ambulance to PeaceHealth Southwest Washington Medical Center in Vancouver, Washington, for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Oregon State Police (OSP) was assisted at the scene by Washington County Sheriff's Office, Banks Fire District, and ODOT. ODOT personnel cleared the fallen trees while the highway was closed or reduced to one lane for approximately 3 hours. The truck was towed and the trucking company responded to remove the semi-trailer.

With our recent snow, wet and windy conditions, OSP and ODOT remind travelers to be alert for limbs and fallen or leaning trees when traveling through forested areas. Motorists are also encouraged to report potential hazardous roadway debris and conditions.
