I Know That Song! The One From "The Most Powerful Electronic Band Ever"

A huge song from 1990 where the singer is in a relationship where he feels words are unnecessary and can even be harmful, so he prefers to enjoy the relationship in silence. Carla Bruni covered this song, and said, "What I like very much about the song is the lyrics. They are quite dark, but they're made stronger because, nowadays, noise is everywhere. We need silence. Silence is healing."

Martin, Fletch, and lead singer Dave are an English trio that actually started as a duo with a different singer. Fletch says his buddy roped him into forming “No Romance in China” a total rip off of The Cure.

The lineup would change with accidental guitarist Andy “Fletch” Fletcher eventually joining Martin Gore and lead singer Dave Gahan.

The band would end up selling 100 million records. A band that has been called the most popular electronic band the world has ever known" by Q magazine and the 10th most successful dance club artist of all time according to Billboard and in January of last year was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with an induction ceremony originally scheduled to take place in May, but was postponed due to COVID-19.

The ceremony eventually took place in November. The band was inducted into the Hall by Oscar winning actress Charlize Theron, who called their music "the soundtrack to my life.” And Coldplay's Chris Martin remarked, "sonically, they were and are about throwing away all the rulebooks”.

When explaining the choice for the band’s unusual name, which is taken from French fashion magazine Dépêche mode, band member Martin Gore said, "It means hurried fashion or fashion dispatch.”
