K103 Honor Roll Recognizes Outstanding Teacher Ken Martinez

K103 and Concordia University are pleased to honor and support outstanding educators making a difference in the lives of students in their schools each month. Congratulations to this month’s honored educator, Ken Martinez9th & 10th Grade English Teacher and Cross Country & Track Team Coach at Aloha High School in Beaverton, Oregon!

Mr. Martinez was nominated by Lynda Gordon. Lynda had this to say:

Ken Martinez is an outstanding teacher and coach of nearly 3 decades. He inspires and motivates both his students and athletes. Aloha High School has the highest level of free and reduced students in the Beaverton school district, so Ken goes above and beyond to help his students get what they need to succeed whether it is books in classes, equipment for his runners, or even mental health referrals for struggling students. Ken has planned and led the largest Cross Country Invitational west of the Mississippi River for many years, mainly to raise funds for his runners. Many kids want to come out for running at Aloha but do not even have running shoes. Through Ken's tireless efforts, his team has equipment, uniforms and a strong program thanks to Ken Martinez.  Several of these athletes have been able to attend.  He really is a fantastic teacher and community builder!

Congrats, Ken, from all of us at K103! Get to know Mr. Martinez through his Q&A below.

How many years have you been teaching?

I am in my 30th year of teaching.

Why did you choose this career and why did you decide to teach high school?

I enjoyed watching my high school teachers do their craft and thought that teaching might be a possibility. I had several teachers who made a big impact in my life. I ran cross country and track in college and when I finished my eligibility, I coached high school athletes and really liked the age group.

What do you love most about your job?

I love the teachers who teach me to be a better teacher and the students who always teach me to be a better teacher.

Other info. about what you do at Aloha High School:

I have been at Aloha High School for 27 years and the staff and students are the reason this school is amazing.
