Customers Take Down Armed Robber

Two customers and a convenience store clerk collaborated to capture an armed robber in the Sumner Neighborhood.

On Sunday, July 2, 2023, at 12:53 a.m., North Precinct Officers responded to an armed robbery of a convenience store located in the 8200 Block of Northeast Sandy Boulevard. The initial call said that the clerk and customers were fighting with the suspect inside the store and a shot had been fired.

Officers arrived and entered the store to find the suspect bleeding from the face and two customers also injured from a physical confrontation. The firearm had already been secured by the clerk. An initial investigation at the scene found that the suspect entered the store, presented the firearm, and made statements regarding his intent to rob the store and the customers. The customers then turned on the suspect and fought for the firearm, pinning the suspect to the ground. During the fight, one round from the revolver was discharged, but no one was struck.

Members from the Detective Division’s Major Crimes Unit and Forensic Evidence Division responded to the scene. Nearby Traffic Division Officers, Canine Officers and the Air Support Unit also assisted.

The suspect, Daniel Israel Jones, 40, of Portland, was transported to a local hospital for injuries sustained in the struggle. He was released and then interviewed by detectives. In addition to the Sumner neighborhood case (23-173291), Jones was also charged with a second robbery that happened July 1, 2023, at 11:30 p.m. in the 500 Block of Southeast 92nd Avenue (23-173203). He was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on charges of Robbery in the First Degree (4 counts), Unlawful Use of a Weapon (4 counts), Menacing (4 counts), and Felon in Possession of a Firearm.

The gun Jones was using (photo) was reported stolen out of Washington in 1996.
