Jessica Simpson recently announced her split from Eric Johnson after ten years of marriage, but they have reportedly been separated for some time now.
A source tells PEOPLE, "They have been separated for a while," adding that "Jess is doing OK." In fact, she has been working on new music, a lot of which is inspired by heartbreak. The source also tells PEOPLE that Simpson is "excited about her new album," but that the separation "is not anything she's taken lightly."
Simpson shared the news of her breakup in a statement to several news outlets, explaining that she and Johnson have been living "separately" while navigating a "painful situation." She said, "Eric and I have been living separately navigating a painful situation in our marriage. Our children come first, and we are focusing on what is best for them. We are grateful for all of the love and support that has been coming our way, and appreciate privacy right now as we work through this as a family."
Jessica first sparked rumors that her marriage was in trouble as she shared several photos to her Instagram from a Nashville studio, teasing that she had new music on the way. She wrote very cryptically, "Interviews in my Nashville music room where I unearthed my singular magic. This comeback is personal, it’s an apology to myself for putting up with everything I did not deserve."
Simpson and Johnson have been married for ten years after tying the knot in July 2014, and having dated for four years. They share three children together, Maxwell (12), Ace (11) and Birdie (5).
