Oregon Humane Conducts Super-Sized Spay-Neuter Event

On Wednesday, July 8, Oregon Humane hosted a “super-sized” spay/neuter event for pet families completing 269 surgeries—206 at the Community Veterinary Hospital in Portland and 63 at the Veterinary Clinic in Salem. In total, 237 cats and 32 dogs received care.

While Oregon Humane provides low-cost spay/neuter for pets each week through the Spay & Save program, the demand far outpaces the availability of services.

This is why, twice a year, Oregon Humane takes an “all hands on deck” approach to expand access to meet the huge need. During these “super-sized” spay/neuter days, Oregon Humane pauses most other veterinary services and focuses on providing high-quality, spay/neuter surgery for as many owned pets in Portland and Salem as possible.

“Access to affordable spay/neuter surgery is one of the biggest challenges for pet owners in our community,” says Dr. Steve Kochis, Oregon Humane Chief Medical Officer. “The issues we face with pet overpopulation all lead back to the same solution—spay/neuter. At Oregon Humane bringing low-cost options to pet owners is one of the most critical ways we turn compassion into action.”

These focused days often result in more spay/neuter surgeries for owned pets than happens in a typical month.

The next super-sized spay/neuter day is scheduled for Oct. 28. More information about Oregon Humane’s veterinary services and low-cost spay/neuter program can be found at www.oregonhumane.org.
