I Know That Song! The One That Gave Madonna A Nickname She Didn't Want

Keep track of the songs all week to figure out the common theme. If you can name it Friday you can win Free Lunch at Jersey Mikes.

The song is about a woman who craves the finer things in life and will manipulate men to get them. This was from what was only the second album from today’s singer, and she was still developing her image. Much to her dismay, the title of today’s song became the star’s nickname, but over the next few years she was able to dissociate from the song and establish many new looks.

This pop icon DID establish her image as a fashion icon as it re-created a classic scene from the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, with her as the Marilyn Monroe character. Through this song’s video, it becomes clear that her glamorous Marilyn Monroe type was actually attracted to sincerity and modesty rather than just riches.

But that message wasn't clear to everyone right away! The song and video were widely misinterpreted, with her being mislabeled as capricious gold digger. The video concept was supposed to be her as an actress playing this role, but as soon as she's off camera, she's a regular gal who likes the simple things - we see her drive off with a regular dude in a crappy car. The irony was lost on or ignored by some media outlets who might have been looking for a storyline or easy nickname for her at the time, so the name and the image stuck.

The video shoot for this song was where today’s singer first met her future husband, Sean Penn. The connection was a mutual friend who was working on the shoot and had been Penn's assistant. Penn came by the shoot and got his first look at his future wife when she was in full costume.

Despite NOT wanting the nickname taken from today’s song, in 2010, this one named diva and her 13-year-old daughter Lourdes launched their "Material Girl" juniors clothing line at Macy's. Many of the looks are inspired by today’s singer and her '80s outfits, including the look from today’s song and video.
