Stacey & Mike's Happy News: Educator Prints 3D Violins For Low Income Kids

In Coal Center, Pennsylvania more than 70% of families are considered low-income and traditional violin rentals can cost hundreds of dollars a year and were simply out of reach.

Inspired by a YouTube video of musicians performing on plastic instruments, superintendent Laura Jacob taught herself to 3D print violins right from her office.

What started with just two printers has grown into over 30, and for just $50 per instrument, she has produced more than 200 free violins for her students over the past five years.

Students now have a weekly 3D violin club, where they experience the joy of making music for the first time. Kids describe feeling “powerful,” “smarter,” and more confident because of the program.
