Stacey & Mike's Happy News: Teen Wheels Brother Through Track Meets, Life

Susan and Jeffrey Bergeman share a bond that goes far beyond the ordinary. When Jeffrey suffered cardiac arrest as a toddler, he was left with cerebral palsy and unable to compete in traditional sports.

That didn’t stop his younger sister Susan, who decided if he couldn’t race on his own, she’d push him right alongside her in every high school cross-country meet she ran.

From steep hills to uneven grass, Susan powered through mile after mile with Jeffrey in his wheelchair, telling her mom, coaches, and anyone else who doubted her: “This isn’t an option…we’re doing it.”

This spring, Susan not only pushed Jeffrey through their final high school races, she also wheeled him across the graduation stage as they both received their diplomas. Today, she runs for St. Mary’s University of Minnesota, saying she’s still running for him.
