A former Maryland police officer says a single moment—and a mysterious voice telling him to “ask them about their laundry” reshaped his entire purpose.
While responding to a call at a homeless camp, he learned that people were washing their clothes in a creek, and he couldn’t shake the image. So he took action.
Pooling donations and his own money, he turned a bus into a fully functioning laundromat on wheels, offering free, accessible laundry service to anyone in need.
The results have been powerful. People who use the service say that simply putting on clean clothes makes them feel better: prouder, more like themselves again.
In just the last few weeks, his Fresh Step Laundry bus has washed more than 2,000 pounds of clothing, and he’s already working toward adding a second vehicle to double his impact.
