A small, family-owned candle company in New Jersey is proving that business can smell good and do good at the same time. For more than 20 years, A Cheerful Giver has partnered with a local nonprofit to provide meaningful, paid employment for adults with special needs, who carefully place the wicks into every hand-poured candle.
There are no quotas and no pressure: employees work as much or as little as they choose, and every shift ends with a paycheck and a sense of pride. The owners say these workers aren’t just part of the process, they are the heart of the operation.
The program operates through Career Opportunity Development Inc., a nonprofit that helps people with disabilities find jobs, training, and independence.
What started as a community effort has grown into a nationwide business with candles sold in thousands of stores and shipped around the world, all while keeping its inclusive mission front and center.
Customers may come for the strong scent, but they stay because each purchase supports real opportunity, real belonging, and real impact in people’s lives.
