There’s a woman named Ruth Hasman, a retired seamstress who has found a beautiful second act in life…running what she lovingly calls a “teddy bear hospital” right out of her home.
For nearly 20 years, she’s been carefully repairing worn, torn, and well-loved stuffed animals, some of them decades old. From replacing missing stuffing and stitching up seams to recreating eyes and even performing what she jokingly calls “fur grafts,” there’s almost nothing she can’t fix.
She even keeps a collection of fabrics and spare parts on hand, or finds what she needs at thrift stores, to make sure every patient gets exactly what they need.
But what really makes her work special isn’t just the repairs, it’s the stories behind each toy. Families and kids bring in their cherished companions, often with notes explaining just how much they mean to them.
Ruth says those messages are what truly touch her heart. And when the stuffed animals are returned, restored and ready for many more years of love, the reactions say it all. What once looked like it had seen better days comes back to life and for the people who love them, it feels like getting a piece of their childhood back.
