At a small elementary school in Campton, New Hampshire, a 7-year-old boy named Ben O’Reilly was facing a kind of loneliness most kids never have to think about.
Ben is deaf, and for a long time, he was the only student in his entire district who couldn’t easily communicate with the people around him.
It would have been easy for that isolation to continue, but something really great happened instead.
It started with just a few kids learning a handful of signs so they could talk to Ben. Then more students joined in. Then teachers. Before long, the entire school community began embracing sign language, not just when Ben was around, but as part of everyday life.
And just like that, Ben’s world opened up. He could ask friends to play, share moments, and feel seen in a way he hadn’t before.
