Stacey & Mike's Happy News: 1st Grader Saves Choking Classmate

A seven year old first grader in North Providence is being called a hero after saving one of his classmates from choking during snack time at school.

Sameer Santana noticed his friend was struggling to breathe after eating apple slices, and while the teacher called for help and alerted the nurse, Sameer calmly stepped in and performed the Heimlich maneuver himself.

Thanks to his quick actions, his classmate was able to breathe again before the situation became even more dangerous.

It turns out he learned the Heimlich maneuver the year before in kindergarten and even Sameer’s own mother was surprised because she had no idea he knew how to perform the life saving technique.

The North Providence Fire Department honored Sameer as an honorary rescue captain, and say they hope his bravery inspires others to step up and help when someone is in need.
